The Savage Detectives

The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolaño is a consummate portrait of the literary & intellectual spirit of Mexico during its golden years. The first part of the novel is told from the perspective of a young poet coming of age in Mexico City; his adolescent eyes reveal the hope and passion alive in Mexico, while simultaneously highlighting the folly of it all: of intellectuality, poetry, love, and life. The second part of the novel, which is less engaging in my opinion, has many narrators, some of whom we have already met in the first section, documenting their experiences, it is much broader thematically as well as geographically. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in Mexican or literary history.
